Yellowstone National Park

Yellowstone NP

We left Spokane on the 22nd September 2006 having had the RV fully serviced. We heading East on Interstate 90 through Idaho and into Montana before turning South onto Route 85 & 191 and into Yellowstone NP via the West entrance. Be warned Yellowstone NP is very big.

Yellowstone NP

We had an uneventful journey and arrived at Yellowstone in the evening to be met by 4 bison casually roaming the road as we approached the entrance (See Photos). We stayed the night at lovely and quiet Madison Camp ground in the park, and was kept awake by the calls of the rutting elk. In the early morning we headed North and had our first take of this spectacular National Park. The effects of the rising steam in the cold still air and sulphurous smell made us giddy, a glorious entrance. We headed to North to the Artists Paint Pots and to a fantastic landscape almost primitive and a omen to what was to follow. (See Photos) (See Map)

Artists Paint Pot

Our first encounter with geysers, albeit small more like mud pools and steam was at this area. The formations and colours of the mineral rich mud's surrounding the geyser holes was superb, and the views through the woods steaming like primordial world that we are taught existed millenniums ago.

Norris Geyser Basin

What can one say about a landscape that is so foreign to ones normal existence, just stunning, we spent the whole afternoon walking past the blow holes, big and small, mud holes, steam vents and along boardwalks through a strange, mesmerising and enchanting landscape. Sometimes almost being overcome with the sulphur fumes, but yet, at the same time, getting addicted to the taste and smell. We spent the night at the Fishing Bridge Camp Ground. (See Photos)

Mammoth Hot Springs

The area is a visual treat and well worth a walk around the grotesque formations built up over many centuries. We stayed at North Entrance Camp Ground. (See Photos)

The Wildlife

We were very fortunate to see both black bear and grizzly as we went over one of the passes. (See Photos) We also saw a lot of other wildlife from coyote to herds of bison. (See Photos)

The Geysers and Lagoons

We were fortunate in seeing 3 eruptions of geysers in a day, including Riverside and Grand Geyser in addition to Old Faithful. It is well worth being patient to see what these geysers as they are more beautiful and stunning than Old Faithful. We stayed the final night at Lewis Lake Camp Ground. (See Photos)
