Mono Lake to Bristle Cone Pine

Wet and Dry Sierras

One has a picture of the dry Sierras from the movies but of course on the high ground they are subject to snow falls and heavy flooding on the flat lowlands. Also in this area is the National Bristle Cone Pine Forest which has trees over 4,000 years old.

From Mono Lake to Bristle Cone Pines

The ground rose immediately from the lake at 4,500 feet past the old pumice mines rising up to 7,000ft over Deadmans Pass before descending into Owens Valley which is about 3 miles wide and runs for miles with the dominating Sierra Nevada's to the West and Inyo National Forests to the East (See Pictures)

The Bristle Cone Pines

The Owens Valley is at 4,000 ft and the route to the Bristle Cone Pines is some 13 miles East rising to 7,000 ft through a very narrow and twisty road. I was unable to get to the very ancient pines as the road is not cleared of snow in the winter but there were plenty of old pines and a very good feeling of the location. (See Photographs)
