Running Costs

I detail below the essential costs incurred of running the RV that you may find of interest if you are contemplating a similar experience.

Petrol

The most important aspect to consider in the running costs is petrol, conversion to Propane Gas is not viable in the USA as there is no facility for this work and it is very expensive. The AC generator is petrol driven.

Our First Trip

The previous owner advised me that he got 8 to 9 mpg from the RV. So far on two separate journeys I averaged 13.55 mpg with 76 hours of generator use over 4,800 miles .Average cost per gallon $2.34. On the second journey, which is the current one over some very mountainous terrain totaling 2,217 miles, I am averaging 12.23 mpg with 20 hours of generator use. Average cost of petrol per gallon is $2.33.

September - December 2006

We travelled a total of 9673 miles at an average of 11.22 mpg plus 53.9 generator hours of petrol usage. The average price of petrol was $2.51 the maximum being $3.40 an minimum of $2.07 per gallon.

LPG (Liquid Propane Gas)

Propane Gas is used for the fridge/freezer and for cooking. This is very economical and cost about $20 per month. Prices vary enormously from $2.00 per gallon to $3.00 in California. The solar panels are a great assistance for keeping the running batteries charged as in sunny weather we hardly have to use the generator at all.

Insurance

Obviously this depends on many factors regarding the value, age of the vehicle and ones individual circumstances. I would estimate around $1,000 per annum would about right for a $60,000 RV.

Licence Plate (Road Fund Tax)

This depends entirely in which State the RV is registered in, for Oregon it is $160 for 2 years.
