Mesa Verde NP

Villages in the Sky

The camping sites in this National Park are excellent and full of wildlife. The guided walks of the Mesa Verde are well worth booking and attending, as this is the only way that you can get into those sites that are on high cliff faces and involve pole ladders and crawling along narrow passage ways.

Route

We traveled south on the I271 and saw our first working cowboys, especially as they waved to us. We stayed at the Morefield camp site within the park. (See Map)

Spruce Tree Terrace

This site is does not require any booking and has an easy access. The site has a reconstructed Keefa which one can descend via a pole ladder and gives a great insight to the roof construction methods.

Balcony House and Cliff Palace

Both these site require booking and a Park Ranger guide. They are well worth the time and effort and one is rewarded by good information from the Rangers as well as a real insight into these communities. (See Photos)

Change of Direction

During our southward trip had met a number of fellow travellers that were making their way to the Albuquerque Hot Air Ballon Festival so we made a dash South to get there for the first day. On the way we called in at 4 Corners, a little disapointing, and passed through the beautiful Shama Valley stopped the night at Chama and having a fantastic meal at a local resturant in the village centre.
