Misunderstandings
It is very easy to fall into the trap of assuming that as the same language is used that all things will be the same, that is not the case. I found many examples of language and cultural differences whilst on our travels and detail some below.
Language
Will Call - This is found above the doors of many establishments, it does not mean that William Call owns the business or premises. It means that you will call for what you have ordered. However there is no indication that this also means that it is the entrance to the store or premises.
Xing - These letters are found on signposts and on the road. This means crossing and can apply to humans, deer, elk and many other animal likely to cross the road. Ironicaly nor is the word found in an Ameican dictionary.
Cultural
Directions - I find asking directions a nightmare as a many Americans have absolutely know knowledge of the place were they live or work and certainly outside of the town. I never ask directions for anything out of the area. The worst aspect is that whilst they want to be helpful they can't be and very rarely say that they do not know so you could try someone else.
Balloons - No it is not a carnival or party going on, it a car sales showroom. How the link came for balloons to identify a new or used car remains a mystery to me.
"If you will" - Used often on the television and the radio after a statement.
"Give me a sense of" - Used to ask another person what is happening.
Other Observations
All trails lead to a Car Park.
