An up and down and swinging road start
After a dash down to Portland and then down Interstate 5 to Grants Pass when we tuned South West on Highway 119 to Crescent City were we spent the night to the sound of the Pacific Ocean. We set of down 101 the following morning and turned West at Leggett on Highway 1. The first 20 miles took us 2 hours as the road was very steep and extremely windy with posted speeds down to 10mph for a car! (See Map) We arrived at Hardy Creek and stayed at Union Landing State Park right beside the cliff top. (See Photographs)
Wildlife
We took some video of the surf and cormorants resting out the heavy seas. (See Video) 320x240 4.2MB
Highway 1 to San Francisco
The weather improved greatly as we headed South and were treated to the wonders of the magnificent coastline and Mendocino City, used for a lot of Hollywood films, Unfortunately we had a problem with the Camera Flash Card and lost some 200 pictures of the southern part of the journey. The road also got very windy and it took us all day to cover 80 miles but well worth it. We were disappointed to discover that the eagles she photographed on this section of the coast turned out to be Turkey Vultures. (See Photographs) (See Video) 320x240 4.7MB
We also witnessed the aftermath of the recent flooding and many roads were being repaired and most had signs of emergency repairs and current work as well as piles of mud and earth on the sides of the road from the numerous land slides.
We stayed the night at Santa Rosa and replaced the shower taps that had started to leak badly and then headed to San Francisco and a town on the northern outskirts called El Ceritto where we could park up and catch the BART into the city.
